Ryslig HMD / Opt-Out
Hey, it's Elijah! Feel free to leave a comment here for my HMD. All comments are screened.
Also, if you want to opt out of interacting with Jean, let me know here! His character deals with themes of mental illness, suicide, and police violence, and while I warn for everything, opting out is 100% understandable! Again, all comments are screened, so drop me a line.

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Jean-Heron Vicquemare
Age: 34
Canon: Disco Elysium
Canon Point: Postgame
Character Information: Here!
Personality: Vicquemare is not easy to get along with. Blunt, forceful, and prone to insults, he nonetheless is a capable enough leader and investigator—at least, compared to some of his colleagues. The closest he comes to being polite is with his new partner, Judit Minot, who he respects seemingly due to her patience and level headed behavior. Even then, he’s not exactly kind: only restrained from his usual abrasiveness. He berates his other colleagues constantly, with the lower end being his irrational disdain towards Trant Heidelstam and his worst ire for his partner, Harry Du Bois. While he’s callous and unpleasant in conversation, he still seems to be a competent team player, able to keep the unit together and lead in his partner’s absence. He is mature and serious, perhaps a little too much for his own good. Someone has to be.
He works incredibly hard (also probably too much), though it seems to be out of genuine concern for the welfare of people. Little is known about his background or why exactly he joined the RCM, but in Harry’s ledger, some of his cases are described. Notably, in one of them, he without hesitation accepts the news that a local apartment building is imminently going to collapse, and goes in the middle of the night to warn the tenants on his own time. Despite his resentment and hatred, Jean also shows a degree of kindness and altruism when he shows up to find out if Harry is okay, and seems genuinely affected when his amnesia seems to be real. He cares about other people as an ideal, if not in practice a lot of the time.
One of his more interesting moments is also within the ledger, where he argues for the presentation of a local work of graffiti. For someone who is almost obsessively pragmatic in other matters, this is sentimental for him, and he successfully puts the matter to vote and wins what he wants. Notably, the mural contains the phrase “It is too late for us”, which is likely where the attachment comes from. Vicquemare refers to his chronic, untreatable depression several times throughout the game, and while he’s very flippant about it, it affects him deeply. He feels as though he’s wasted his life at 34 and that the future is somehow even bleaker, a condition aggravated by his partner’s abusive behavior towards him. While he has his moments of compassion, most of it has been burned out of him towards the people he’s actually close with. The mural in full states: “True love is possible, only in the next world, for new people; it is too late for us (wreak havoc on the middle class)”, which, minus the class warfare stuff, is a very succinct way of relating Jean’s state of mind. He believes in a better world, but not for himself, whether because he doesn’t deserve it or because he doesn’t need it.
Being a detective, Jean is keenly observant and very thorough. He notices Harry is missing due to his mail being left in the box for days, and tracks him across Martinaise, if only to be very unkind towards him. While his lieutenant status is due to his partner being promoted, there’s little doubt that he could have earned it on his own. He is able to take on double his usual caseload when members of the team are indisposed, and seems to genuinely work very hard judging from his cases in the ledger and his interest in the murder investigation that the game surrounds. He doesn’t give up, ever, even when it would be much easier for him.
Of course, being good at cop work is not a good thing. One of the more alarming aspects of the game involves a church that was shot up by the RCM prior to the story starting, something that Jean helped organize. He seems to be ashamed of whatever it was he did, as he refuses to elaborate on exactly what happened. His callousness doesn’t just make him rude towards his coworkers: his work in the police force has eroded away parts of his empathy. While he ultimately wants to help as many people as he can, he often will prioritize his ideal of policing, often by enabling and covering for his fellow officers. He clearly believes that the ends justify the means.
All in all, Jean is a complicated character. Unhappy, unpleasant, and unethical, he still holds a little bit of hope for the world and wants to make it a better place for others. He even has a sense of humor despite it all, and is much less robotic than he seems at first brush. He’s not one to give up easily.
